EIGRP Classic Mode

Lab Objectives

  • Configure EIGRP (Classic mode) using AS number 111 and appropriate network statements on the routers in the base topology.
  • Establish and verify EIGRP neighbor adjacencies between R1–R2, R1–R3 and R1–R4.
  • Confirm routes learned via EIGRP appear in the routing table.

Complete these tasks WITHOUT looking at the solution below. Use ? and show commands to figure it out.

Task 1: Configure EIGRP on R1

Enable EIGRP in Autonomous System (AS) 111 on R1 and advertise the three directly-connected networks (10.10.10.0/24, 10.10.20.0/24, 10.10.30.0/24) so R1 can form neighbors with R2, R3 and R4.

Task 2: Configure EIGRP on R2, R3 and R4

Enable EIGRP in AS 111 on R2 and advertise 10.10.10.0/24 and 10.10.40.0/24. On R3 and R4 enable EIGRP in AS 111 and advertise their respective directly-connected networks (R3: 10.10.20.0/24, R4: 10.10.30.0/24). Ensure all routers use the same AS number.

Task 3: Verify EIGRP neighbor adjacency and learned routes

Use show commands to confirm neighbors are up and that each router has learned routes from its EIGRP peers.

Think About It: If R1, R2 and R3 are configured with EIGRP AS 111 but R4 is mistakenly configured with AS 112, how and why would that affect routing between PC4 (behind R4) and PC1 (behind R2)?

Lab Solution

Task 1 Solution: Configure EIGRP on R1

What we are doing: Enable EIGRP Classic mode with AS number 111 on R1 and advertise the local connected networks so R1 can discover and form EIGRP neighbors with R2, R3 and R4.

What each command does and why it matters:

  • router eigrp 111 — Enters EIGRP configuration for Autonomous System 111. Routers must share the same AS number to form adjacencies; this AS identifies the EIGRP routing domain.
  • network 10.10.10.0 / network 10.10.20.0 / network 10.10.30.0 — Tells EIGRP to enable the protocol on interfaces that have IPs in these networks and to advertise those networks to EIGRP peers. This is how a router publishes reachable prefixes to neighbors.
